In 1951, E.W. (Woody) Blossman created Blossman Gas in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. In the beginning all Blossman employees were on call 24/7 in support of “Mr. B’s” philosophy - “don’t leave ‘em cold.”
In 1960, Blossman purchased Bowden Butane in Georgia and opened two new branches in Alabama and Georgia. In 1966, Blossman partnered with Abston Gas and opened a branch in Waynesboro. As the 1960s came to a close, Blossman had expanded to 14 branches.
Acquisitions of the previous decade resulted in rapid branch growth in the early 1970s and five additional branches in Georgia and Alabama. Then a new series of acquisitions began that continued through two decades and, along with internal growth and expansions, resulted in the company growing to 28 branches with an annual sales volume of 36 million gallons.
By 1985, Blossman Gas was the first multi-state propane marketer to unify all its locations with a real-time computerized management information system.
Blossman Gas was one of the first propane marketers to embrace the National Propane Gas Association’s GAS Check Program. Blossman’s safety and training program was refined and is now the best and most respected program in the propane industry.
During the 1980s, our nation began exploring alternative fuels for vehicle transportation. Carburetion shops were opened in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, with motor fuel volume reaching six million gallons. Blossman Gas also began expanding heavily into the Carolinas.
Heading into the new millennium, the Blossman Gas family included 77 branches with over 76 million gallons in sales – ranking Blossman the 11th largest propane company in the country and the largest independent (family-owned). Blossman also saw huge growth in new markets such as Tennessee and Virginia.
In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina severely impacted the Mississippi Gulf Coast including Blossman’s home office and 15 other branches. Blossman employees from all over traveled to the coast to volunteer. Blossman was able to re-open in record time to serve its thousands of customers, which included government and non-profit relief agencies.
Blossman installed state-of-the-art computers at every branch and implemented a financial reporting and customer accounting software that allowed Blossman to serve twice the present customer base.
Alliance AutoGas, founded by Blossman in 2009 in order to promote propane as a vehicle fuel, has experienced large growth in the 2010s. Alliance AutoGas is a complete program to help fleets shift from gasoline to propane autogas.
Another Blossman initiative, Autogas for America, has seen continued growth since 2009. Autogas for America serves as the unified voice of the U.S. autogas market and is comprised of autogas industry experts, transportations specialists, autogas fleets and environmental advocates. Additionally, Blossman Gas has acquired McCombs Oil, Uneeda Gas, and Leco Gas.
